The Developmental Pathways Project (DPP) has a total of 12 government agencies involved, and uses linked, de-identified data to investigate the developmental outcomes of Western Australian children. International collaborations investigating trends in child maltreatment using linked data. Additionally, we have researchers using commonwealth pharmaceutical data to investigate child outcomes after maternal use of prescription drugs during pregnancy. The institute has established and maintains a number of population based registers, such as the Cerebral Palsy database and the Birth Defects Register.

The overarching aim of this research is to contribute to the evidence-base that delivers equitable developmental opportunities for children, particularly birth to four years.

The Rick Hansen Institute (RHI) runs The Rick Hansen SCI Registry (RHSCIR), which is a pan-Canadian prospective observational registry of individuals sustaining a traumatic spinal cord injury at 31 major Canadian acute care and rehabilitation hospitals. RHSCIR was initiated as a research study sponsored by the Rick Hansen Institute and was developed to collect data on individuals who sustain spinal cord injuries and link clinicians, researchers, and health care administrators with the goal of improving both research and clinical practice for individuals with SCI by facilitating the translation of research into clinical practice and promotion of evidence-based practices. We also have other data holdings from health administrative databases and link RHSCIR data to some of these data sources too. We're interested in innovative ways of linking and expanding our data pool.

Research interests: Developing the capacity to conduct large-scale observational comparative outcome analyses. With the assistance of the Ministry of Health and PHARMAC, NZ’s public drugs purchaser, we have begun work on a small portfolio of comparative studies, including the assessment of differential outcomes in: women taking short vs. long courses of trastuzumab (Herceptin) for breast cancer (a significant controversial topic in NZ); women taking tamoxifen for breast cancer, plus or minus paroxetine or fluoxetin (Paxil and Prozac) for depression (the latter drugs seem to block the effect of tamoxifen); and people with multiple sclerosis taking (vs. not taking) beta interferon. The latter two analyses are being conducted in association with colleagues in British Columbia.
